This holy day of obligation celebrates our Lady's freedom from all sin from the beginning of her life. It is the patronal feast of the United States of America. Holy Mary, conceived without sin, pray for the evangelization of our nation!

Though we don't celebrate his feast liturgically this year, we can all learn from St. Juan Diego, whose obedience to our Lady paved the way for the evangelization of Mexico. St. Juan Diego, pray that we will spread the Gospel through humility and obedience!

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Thursday, December 12

Our Lady's appearance to a native Mexican man (St. Juan Diego) in the sixteenth century was the catalyst for countless conversions ot Christ in the New World. She is also the patroness of the pro-life movement. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray that we will share the Gospel of Life with all people!

St. Lucy

Friday, December 13

St. Lucy is a young girl who was martyred in the early fourth century for refusing to worship the Roman Gods. St. Lucy, pray that our youth will have the courage to stand up for Christ and preach the Gospel to their peers!

Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service, so that, as we take up battle against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint.

This collect prayer begins the Mass for Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Jesus is calling us to "take up battle against spiritual evils." We'll explore fasting itself in a few weeks; during the week of Ash Wednesday, we're going to dig into an important set of weapons the Lord gives us to fight evil: sacramentals.

What's a sacramental? Well, if you attend Mass on Ash Wednesday, you're probably going to receive one on your forehead.
